Festival Award winners 2022

  • Oliver-Jones Award: Christina Beaudry-Cárdena

    The Oliver-Jones Award was created in 2019 for the 40th edition of the Festival to honour and recognize the young university student musicians who consider themselves members of a visible minority, to which Stingray is proudly associating its Stingray Rising Stars program.

    The freshly-minted Concordia University graduate and drummer presents a fusion of jazz and Peruvian music with her project Pizca, which features a mix of standards from both musical styles along with arrangements inspired by great legends and her own creations.

  • B.B.-King Award: Colin James

    The B.B.-King Blues Award was created in 2014 for the 35th edition of the Festival to honour and recognize the exceptional talent of an artist who has left an indelible mark on the blues scene.

    With a 30-plus-year career to his name and 20 hit albums, James continues to thrill rock, swing and blues fans, whether as a consummate guitarist, onstage or in studio.

  • Antonio-Carlos-Jobim Award: Bebel Gilberto

    The Antonio Carlos Jobim Award was created on the occasion of the Festival’s 25th anniversary to honour artists distinguished in the field of world music and whose influence on the evolution of jazz and cultural crossover is widely recognized.

    Brazilian songwriter Bebel Gilberto is a jazz sensation. Ever since she launched her career in 1986, this Grammy-nominated global star has recorded 8 albums blending different musical styles to create a sound that is uniquely hers.

  • Miles-Davis Award: Robert Glasper

    The Miles Davis Award was created for the Festival’s 15th anniversary in 1994 to honour a great international jazz musician for the entire body of his or her work and influence in regeneratingthe jazz idiom.

    With four Grammys under his belt and collaborations with legendary artists like Kendrick Lamar, Glasper continues to work his magic, producing unique songs in every style, whether solo or with his groups, The Robert Glasper Trio and The Robert Glasper Experiment. Over the course of 11 albums, Robert Glasper has had a huge impact on the world of jazz and R&B.

  • Oscar-Peterson Award: Ranee Lee

    Created on the 10th anniversary of the Festival in 1989, the Oscar Peterson Award recognizes a performer’s musicianship and exceptional contribution to the development of Canadian jazz.

    A true Canadian jazz pioneer, Ranee Lee has brought together jazz and Broadway fans alike since embarking on her career over 40 years ago. She has been a key figure on the jazz scene with more than a dozen hit albums and collaborations with jazz greats such as Oliver Jones and Clark Terry.

  • Ella-Fitzgerald Award: China Forbes

    The Festival created the Ella Fitzgerald Award for its 20th anniversary in 1999, annualy conferring it upon a jazz singer of significant talent who has had a major impact and influence on the international scene.

    Throughout her career, Forbes has sung in over 20 languages, on stages that range from the Sydney Opera House to the Olympia de Paris. A true star of the music world, China Forbes has released 8 albums with Pink Martini, with whom she has performed 20 sold-out concerts at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, as well as 3 solo albums.

  • Bruce-Lundvall Award: Stanley Péan

    The Bruce Lundvall Award, created in 2009 during the Festival’s 30th edition, is presented annually to a non-musician who has left a mark on the world of jazz or contributed to the development of the music, through the media, the concert or record industries

    Writer, journalist and radio host Stanley Péan is an icon for jazz fans in Québec. As host of Quand le jazz est là, a daily radio show broadcast on ICI Musique, Radio-Canada’s music radio for over 10 years, ambassador to the Estival Jazz et Blues!, a title he has also held for the past 10 years and long-time contributor to the music section of the Voir newspaper, he has been a major contributor to Québec’s jazz scene.

  • Montréal Jazz Festival Spirit Award: The Roots

    The Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award underlines a popular artist’s extraordinary contribution to the musical world.

    Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, récipiendaire de trois GRAMMY’s aux côtés de son groupe The Roots, et d’un Oscar, est une icône de la scène musicale mondiale. A legend on the global music scene, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson has won three Grammys with his band The Roots and an Oscar for best documentary film Summer of Soul. In addition to releasing 12 hit albums with The Roots, Questlove is known for his work on television with Jimmy Fallon and on Broadway as producer of the soundtrack of the global musical phenomenon Hamilton.
