A pioneer in sustainable development in the Montréal events sector, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal began taking environmental action as early as 1989. Since then, the Festival has continued to implement sustainable development initiatives to minimize its impact on the environment and maximize its positive influence on society and the local economy.

Demonstrating that it is possible to welcome millions of festival-goers while minimizing its environmental footprint, the Festival strives to be a role model and leader in environmental responsibility.

With that in mind, the Festival is actively working to obtain the BNQ Level 2 standard, proving the seriousness of its commitment and approach.

KEY ACTIONS

  • Using hydroelectric power for all of our facilities (except for generators used in emergencies) or solar power when possible (for lighting the restrooms, for example).
  • Installing self-service water fountains so that festival-goers can fill their reusable cups or water bottles.
  • Requiring 100% reusable alternatives for all dishes and cutlery used by the Festival restaurants.
  • Eliminating single-use plastic cups at Festival food and drink stands and in artists' dressing rooms and backstage areas.
  • Installing waste sorting islands (waste/recycling/compost) to encourage efficient waste sorting by festival-goers.
  • Forming a green brigade to inform and help festival-goers sort their waste.
  • Creating an Eco-Centre dedicated to recovering construction and hazardous materials, and a sorting centre for cans, aluminum bottles and reusable cups.
  • Collecting cigarette butts using urban ashtrays installed on site. The butts are collected and recycled by Mégot Zéro.
  • Drastically reducing the use of printed materials: printed programs, menus and promotional tools have been banned in favour of screens, monoliths and a mobile application.
  • Providing over 300 free bicycle parking spaces to encourage the use of active transportation to get to the Festival.
  • Promoting public transit on the Festival website and mobile application.
  • Giving back to the community through collaborations with La rue des Femmes and Renaissance.
  • Designing the site to accommodate people with reduced mobility and improve their experience.
