DESCRIPTION:JAN GARBAREK AND THE HILLIARD ENSEMBLE \n\nHowever illustrious his thirty-year career may have been, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek caused quite a commotion with his Officium project of 1993, an album recorded in the monastery of St. Gerold with early-music specialists the Hilliard Ensemble. Officium shot to the top of the jazz charts and won Garbarek a whole new public. When his saxophone joins its haunting, sweeping melodies to the harmonic structure, produced by the Hilliard’s celestial voices, sound textures become rich and intricate and the effect truly spellbinding — as it does on the album Mnemosyme, recorded in the same setting five years later and released this spring. This evening in the Notre Dame Basilica, Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble invite you to an exceptional concert featuring selections from both projects.
