Master Musicians of Jajouka

13 musicians on stage
"Jajouka", the name of a picturesque village in the mountains of Morocco, means "something good will come to you". Pretty good prediction for Festival-goers who will be seeing the Master Musicians for the first time. In 1968, Brian Jones, ex-guitar of the Rolling Stones, was the first to be taken in by the seductive sound of their raita, a kind of panpipe also called the ghaita. Fleeing the limelight, the Master Musicians of Jajouka weren't seen until the Stones included them in their 1989 album, Steel Wheels. Either together or in counterpoint, the thirteen musicians combine the raita with religious incantation and percussion. The Village Voice was enthralled by them after their January 1996 appearance in New York: "I swear this was a strictly acoustical phenomenon never before had I encountered such a sound".
