Tom zé / Dori Caymmi

The Nouvel Observateur discovered him just before we did: "Tom Zé is a genius," was the verdict. Zé's gems can be found on David Byrne's label and are a sure source of rhythm and unanimous satisfaction. With samba and bossa nova generously added for flavour, his music transcends its tropical origins. Verbal acrobatics are inspired by authors such as William Faulkner, Cervantes and others of comparable calibre. When intelligence and warm music come together, you can't ask for more.

As for Dori Caymmi, his ethereal album, Brasilian Serenata, is devoted to the great universel causes. Setting the tone are songs like "Amazon River" (for the preservation of the Amazon rain forest), "Tres Curumins" (for the sovereignty of Indien territories) and "The Colors of Joy" (for better understanding in South Africa), all reminiscent of Joao Gilberto. How can one be against these good intentions, especialiy when they're so beautifully defended? This talented guitarist has the advantage of working with several collaborators who are intent on forming an alliance between Brazilian music and California jazz.
