Rabih Abou-Khalil

"I have gone a long way around to discover something that has always been with me but which I thought could only be found somewhere else. Now, so many things are coming together— the blackness of jazz, my own nativeness." Proposed is an electrifying adventure into the no-man's-land of world beat. Rabih Abou-Khalil introduces a realm situated at the confines of jazz and African music. Rabih, who grew up in the area around cosmopolitan Beirut, took up the Arab lute (the oud) very early in life. Then, when civil war forced him into exile, he learned to play the flute in Munich. Such is the man, such is his music. His compositions owe much to the rhythms and modes of traditional Arab music while reflecting the tastes of a musician who, as a teenager, listened as intensely to Frank Zappa and John Coltrane as to the Egyptian singer Oum Kalsoum. Who ever said commingling didn't give good results should take a few minutes and hear Rabih out.
