Odean Pope

En première à Montréal : Odean Pope Saxophone Choir

What do Thelonious Monk, Nat King Cole and Odean Pope have in common? All three are African-American, their talent is admirable... And what else? They all had parents who played the piano or sang in church. Odean Pope is a case in point: his father played the trombone in a brass band, thus explaining the son's interest in that kind of group. Originally from South Carolina, Odean Pope is often associated with drummer Max Roach. That's because they've been playing together since 1967. Alter studying several other instruments — the oboe, piccolo and english horn — he devoted himself to composing for full orchestra. From Max Roach's group (we heard them play together at last year's Festival) he moved on to his own trio and the Saxophone Choir, a nine-saxophone ensemble with rhythm section, 12 musicians in all. This is the Choir's first appearance in Montreal. The idea behind the Saxophone Choir was inspired by the memory of childhood church choirs, so be ready for nothing less than a musical revelation.
