Steve Coleman and Five Elements

New jazz has just entered the ring. If is young, spirited, and it packs a punch! And the fist behind the punch is saxophonist Steve Coleman, one of the new inventors of African-American music, an advocate of a major wave in contemporary jazz hailing from Brooklyn and known as M-Base. The conventional is anathema for Coleman and his group: they prefer more adventurous moves. Jazz? Free? R & B? Pigeonholes won't do. Coleman prefers to speak of Black Music. After stints with several major bands including those of Thad Jones-Mel Lewis and Cecil Taylor, after accompanying such greats as Abbey Lincoln, Dave Holland and Branford Marsalis, the rebel sax player now likes to experiment with new champions like Greg Osby and Cassandra Wilson. The results are explosive.
