Les chats du sax ténor Gato Barbieri et ses musiciens / Johnny Griffin et ses musiciens

Every jazz cat in the twilight is far from grey. To Argentinian saxophonist Gato Barbieri we owe varm, well-rounded phrasing and a memorable part in the sound track of the cult film Last Tango in Paris. This fan of Charlie Parker has placed his horn in the service of, among others, Don Cherry, Carla Bley and Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra. Seeking to be more in touch with his roots, Barbieri has surrounded himself with South-American musicians since 1973. He made an appearance at the Festival's 4th edition in 1983; this year, he's back in force with Festival theme and visuals as reminders of his presence. As for Little Johnny Griffin, his sax playing is famous for its lyrical, incisive qualities. The title piece of his next to last album, The Cat, has upplied this year's Festival with its musical theme. Griffin was last here 1987, and Gilles Archambault of Le Devoir had this to say: "His performance left me with a sense of contentment, an all too rare feeling". Barbieri and Griffin: music you can eally sink your claws into.
