Dee Dee Brigewater et ses musiciens / John Pizzarelli and Orchestra

They love her in France, but here she's still an unknown quantity. With her energy-filled, inventive scats, and a voice that evokes an impressive series of qualifiers - powerful, sensual, colourful, explosive — Dee Dee Bridgewater was consecrated best jazz singer by Down Beat magazine in 1990. At only 20, she reigned over New York's Village Vanguard, singing with the band led by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. She later sang with the best that New York had to offer: Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon. In France she even sang in a musical, playing Billie Holiday with her usual charm and elegance in Lady Day. What more can one say about this very funny lady except maybe that her coming to Montreal is an event in itself? John Pizzarelli, guitarist-singer-bandleader-crooner and son of Bucky, is returning to sing the wonders of 1930s New York. At last year's Festival, Pizzarelli transformed the Club Soda into a temple of easy swing for an entire week; this year he's back, for one night only. And to get the standards to ring out like they did in that romantic decade, this great admirer of Benny Goodman and of Count Basie's big band is accompanied by a full orchestra.
