John Hicks

Piano Solo
If you don't know John Hicks, then it's probably because the Saint Louis piano player has always been in the shadow of great personalities. He started out with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, then played with singer Betty Carter. In the middle of the 60s, Hicks continued his training as part of Woody Herman's orchestra. That's when he became interested in the avant-garde movement. We've heard him play on a regular basis with Lester Bowie, Arthur Blythe, Pharoah Sanders, Hamiet Bluiett of the World Saxophone Quartet and, more recently, with the Mingus Dynasty. When he finally began his solo career, jazz-lovers discovered a musician as multitalented as he is inspiring. His wild left hand and his clear sound have made his enviable reputation; at first a simple accompanist, Hicks has quickly become a prestigious name, one we're proud to present this summer.
