Ed Blackwell Project

with Mark Helias and Carlos Ward
Ed Blackwell has become a beacon among modern jazz drummers. After a stint with Ray Charles and Ellis Marsalis, he and Ornette Coleman produced that manifesta recording, the eponymous Free Jazz, a landmark exploration of new stylistic horizons. He played with Eric Dolphy, Booker Little and other avant-garde interpreters of the new style, then came back to bop when he joined up with Thelonious Monk. Ed Blackwell's success in transforming his drums and cymbals into melodic instruments have earned the respect of all. Like Max Rouch and Tony Williams, he has favoured a unique approach to the rhythm section, one that puts expressiveness above all else. He is joined on stage by the equally avant-garde Mark Helias and sax player Carlos Word.
