Gary Burton, "best vibist" in every down beat poll since 1968, has remained a favorite of jazz players and listeners alike. Burton's group has at various times included musicians of the stature of Larry Coryell, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. He's recorded in duo with Keith Jarrett. Argentinian tango master Astor Piazzola composed a suite for vibraphone in his honour. Burton's current quintet, which admirably complements its leader's richness of tone and fascinating sense of harmonic invention, includes Makoto Ozone, who is now being touted as "the next great romantic jazz pianist", with the solid backing of Donny McCaslin on sax, Gildas Bocle on bass and Martin Richards on drums. No clichés about "good vibes" here. Just a late evening of fine music.
