As is the case with all legends, Ray Charles needs no introduction. One of this century's last authentic remaining stars, this genial pianist and singer has transcended the jazz universe, mixing the rhythms of blues, soul, pop, and western, into a musical cocktail which bears his distinctive signature. Accompanied by his five back-up singers, the Raeletts, and the Ray Charles Orchestra, an ensemble of 17 musicians, Ray Charles is undoubtedly one of the major international attractions in jazz. Honour to whom honour is due: on July 2nd, 1980, Ray Charles gave an admirable performance at the inaugural concert of the very first Festival, presented at Place des Nations on Ile Ste-Hélène. The first page of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal's history was written then, and by what a master! Who could have asked for more?
