Ronin – a lone samurai, with no clan and no master, an independent warrior serving his own code. Without a doubt, Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch qualifies. He describes his singular music as “zen-funk.” The critics say his Stoa album sounds like James Brown’s band directed by Steve Reich or Terry Riley: a mysterious, hypnotic groove. It is his first Festival visit.
