BlackMahal

You won’t find a better definition of “culture shock” this year than the one offered by California outfit BlackMahal. Led by colourful percussionist and singer Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti, the troupe shakes‘n’stirs hip hop and Punjabi music (and jazz and funk) with an especially contagious enthusiasm. A standout during the cultural program at the Vancouver Olympic Games in 2010, BlackMahal presents its turbaned groove here for the very first time.

BlackMahal is a musical project created by a gang of zany San Franciscans who are also executives in high-tech multinationals. Hip hop is their passion, to which they’ve added a singular musical inflection straight from the Punjab. The result is unequivocal: urban “turban groove”, festive and unique. A wonderful discovery!
