Rafael Zaldivar Trio with Greg Osby

Renowned for his talents as an improviser and composer, this native of Cuba is without a doubt THE new Montreal jazz piano sensation. His debut album, Life Directions, released in 2010, introduced us to an alloy of cultures, sounds and styles shifting from Cuban traditions to contemporary rhythms. After a sparkling performance in the Balmoral this past November, Rafael Zaldivar heads to the Festival in a trio with special guest Greg Osby, the American saxophonist known for his fabulous improvisational skills, fluidity and power.

Michel Bonin
from Vancouver will attend this concert:

As far as I am concerned, Osby is the real 'all-star' pick for this 33rd edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Go listen and you will know what I mean! For those of Northeast Asian origin who may come to read this, Zaldivar is likely an unknown at least in China, South Korea and among the jazz savvy fans in Japan. He is also a stranger to me but not to the well-acquainted aficionados on the now rejuvenated jazz scene in Montreal. With places like 'Le Balmoral' and 'l'Astral', the 'quartier des spectacles' has turned the jazz scene into full year-round effervescence in this Quebec metropolis. This selection is being published in Japanese, Chinese and Korean through Japan Advertising, publisher of CanadaJournal.com. They are not in a particular order of appreciation but presented chronologically as they appear in the official program. My selctions can also be viewed in English on my own blog at www.michelbonin.com/blog and accessed through my tweets @pianoreflexions.
