I saw Gary Burton with Steve Swallow and the quartet during the mid-1970s and was highly impressed by the evolved performance that he gave. Gary Burton popularized the use of four mallets on the vibraphone, extending the harmonic range and possibilities of the instrument. The original quartet was born from the Stan Getz Quartet, which I believe was the first gig for Burton, having started with Getz around 1963. An intellectual player, and highly gifted technically, Burton is always exploring. This is a concert not to be missed!

The Bad Plus is an incredibly tight improvisational trio, unafraid to depart from traditional jazz repertoire, yet still drawing on jazz techniques to create something wonderfully unique. Each player has a strong separate voice, yet the ensemble blends to deliver performances that are at once highly creative and yet very cohesive. This is post-modern jazz at its best. A must see!

I saw Jamie Cullum a couple of years ago at the Festival and he was an incredible performer! Very comfortable in both jazz and pop idioms and an excellent musician, he also had a great backing band. Certainly a treat and worth going to see!

What can you say about Buddy Guy? A veteran bluesman, who accompanied some of the greats of the blues, including Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and Junior Wells. He was a huge influence on Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn and I guess that you can say that he was important in giving birth to the electric blues. He has just gotten better with time - an incredible voice, unbelievable technique, an ability to make his guitar speak, and a highly entertaining performer. And all while respecting the tradition and the intent of the blues. It just doesn't get any better than Buddy Guy.

Lee Konitz was one of the principle players responsible for the "Cool Jazz" movement, having played with Lennie Tristano and recorded with Miles Davis on the 1950 "Birth of the Cool" album. Over the years, he has evolved with jazz and is always exploring new styles, including avant-garde. It is a rare opportunity to see 60 years worth of jazz evolution in one player. This is certainly an important concert for the jazz aficionado to check out.

Jeff Beck is an important guitarist is the birth of the British blues rock movement of the mid-60s, having been one of the three guitarists with the Yardbirds, along with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Beck also did seminal session work with other artists, such as Donovan, and headed his own groups, notably with Rod Stewart as vocalist. His playing has transcended the rock style, with forays into the jazz-rock idiom. Jeff Beck is a 60s era guitar god who has never ceased to evolve. A must see concert...

Joe Cocker is the finest rock vocalist ever produced! His roots go back to the beginnings of the British blues rock movement, having toured with the Hollies and the Rolling Stones as an opening act during the early 60s. His first three albums are classics and Mad Dogs and Englishmen is one of my top ten favorite albums of all time. Cocker has survived changing musical styles over nearly five decades due to the quality of his interpretations, his exceptional voice and simply because he is that good!
