Keep your eyes on this young piano-bass-drums trio from Toronto, serious contenders for this year’s TD Grand Jazz Award. Their music reminds me of of EST and the Brad Mehldau trio and from my perspective, these players will have plenty to say about the future of Canadian jazz.

I think we are presented here with the opportunity to discover an artist at the dawn of a great career. An Israeli-born Ethiopian, the singer delves deeply into the Ethio-jazz-soul that is her musical birthright. Working in the tradition founded by Mulatu Astatke, she may remind you of such luminous voices as Eryka Badu, Jill Scott or even Lauryn Hill.

What a voice! No, I’m not referring to power, but the sound of a voice full of life, a voice that transports us. When you hear Valerie June, you’ll feel like you’re sipping a bourbon and eating spicy chicken wings while sitting in a rocking chair on an old boat gliding gently down the Mississippi. Add in the talents of Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, who produced her 4th album, and you brew up a delicious blues-folk-soul-bluegrass blend. Be there or be square.

Get ready to be plunged into the incredible sound of the ’60s. Lady means rolling organ, punchy horns and a gorgeous retro-soul sound. Featuring the fabulous voice of Nicole Wray (who has collaborated with Missy Elliot), Lady is absolutely one of the most interesting groups of the “soul revival” movement.

Sandra was named best Jazz Discovery at the 2012 Victoires de la Musique awards in France, a bit of a surprise for a singer whose style leans more towards R&B and soul than the tradition of the great female jazz singers. Once onstage, you will discover a generous, humanist Franco-Cameroonian singer with a deep, very personal, even sensual voice whose energy never flags when it comes to thrilling her audience. She may remind you a little of Janelle Monae.

Working in the shadow of the more successful Buena Vista Social Club, this 11-piece Cuban group perhaps was not lucky enough to stumble upon their own Ry Cooder. One thing is certain: these Cuban stars will transport you to Havana for two hours and pump the very best of their native music(s) into your ears: montuno, guajira, guaracha, mambo, danzon, charanga, rumba, cha cha cha and on and on…

I might have chosen François Bourassa, Bachar Mar-Khalifé, Keith Jarrett, Randy Weston, Brad Mehldau, Tigran, Shai Maestro, Jérôme Beaulieu or Monty Alexander, but I think that Kris Bowers is the name that most captivates me in this 2014 piano edition. We don’t know him very well, there are precious few videos floating around on the Internet, and there were no albums or EPs until Heroes + Misfits, released on Concord in March 2014. It’s pure pleasure to hear his well-produced “popified” approach, enriched by completely integrated electronica, rock and R&B influences. This could be one if the very best picks of this year’s Festival.

I like to think of these guys as the hipsters of contemporary jazz. From rock to electronica to hip-hop above all, on a bedrock of jazz. Band-in-residence at Coachella 2012, where they backed Frank Ocean, they’ve also collaborated with rapper Tyler, The Creator. These freaks will go very, very far, and I intend to follow them closely for a long time to come.

For me, this is the absolute must-see artist of this Festival. I’ve wanted to see him since 2005 following the release of his soundtrack to Broken Flowers by director Jim Jarmusch. Recognized as the Father of Ethio-jazz, and a member of the incredible Éthiopiques alongside Mahmoud Ahmed, I consider Mulatu one of the greatest fusion artists in ethno-jazz.
