He’s FINALLY back at the Festival! A star of Europe’s jazz festivals, Avishai is not only a born performer, he has a talent for blending musical cultures (jazz, flamenco, classical, Middle Eastern music…). The long-awaited return of one of the spearheads of the contemporary jazz scene.

Airelle Besson and Nelson Veras

Club Jazz Casino de Montréal à la place SNC-Lavalin

Just nominated for an award at the Victoires de la Musique in France, Airelle finally arrives to showcase the full range of her talents. Accompanied by Nelson Veras, she’ll present her soothing chamber-jazz, subtle and, above all, magnificent. A gentle aperitif.

When I discovered Blue Camel, I finally understood the concept of a Desert Island Disc. A perfect fusion of Middle Eastern music and jazz; music that makes you want to sip a cocktail on a sand dune. As far as I’m concerned, the Lebanese oud master is an absolute must-see of the Monument-National series.

Intelligent pop-folk in the vein of Arcade Fire, Patrick Watson or even Beirut. This Is How I Let You Down is one of the songs I most listened to last year. The singer has a singular, poignant voice. He even plays trumpet, all for the same price! Indulge yourself.

CIBL 101,5

THE merging jazz group on the British (global?) scene. This piano-bass-drums trio aims to evolve the jazz idiom, in the vein of Portico, Bad Plus, Neil Cowley... Their nomination for the famed UK Mercury Prize offers ample testament to their superior quality.

Another wildly talented singer who, like Charles Bradley or Rodriguez, set his singing career aside for decades while life led him elsewhere. Recently, a group of kids flushed him out of his native Minnesota and, at 66, he’s found a new life as a singer with the kind of bottomless soul the music biz needs right now.

Troker

Club Jazz Casino de Montréal à la place SNC-Lavalin

A band of (very) joyous Mexicans who fire out supercharged jazz wired with rock, hip-hop, funk and Afrobeat influences… and let’s not forget the pinch of mariachi that makes the whole thing go off like fireworks.

Rouge 107,3 fm | CJAD 800 AM News-Talk-Radio | CIBL 101,5 Animer Montreal

My final fave; her album has been on an endless loop in my head for weeks. A crystalline voice at the service of intelligent pop, sumptuous arrangements and the aura of vintage soul and R&B. Quite frankly, perfectly fresh.

The group of young blond kids from Holland groove into Afrobeat—or should I say ‘Afrunkbeat’! One thing is certain, they’ve assimilated their influences and then some, and are ready to slap us silly with a facefull of rhythm!

MusiquePlus | CKOI 96,9 MTL | Virgin Radio 96 | CHOM97.7 The Spirit of Rock

This Toronto trio has delivered one of the most exciting albums of the year, inviting none other than Ghostface Killah (Wu Tang clan) to rap over dark-hued and diabolically great instrumentals and beats, influenced by the ’60s and ’70s.
