The Gazette

Winner of the Miles Davis Award this year, Charles Lloyd is among those who revolutionized jazz and jazz-rock in the 70s, in addition to introducing us to pianists Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett. He is one of the artists of my generation who brought me to jazz. The final performance in his three-evening series, with Jason Moran on piano and Bill Frisell on guitar, should be a performance you can’t afford to miss.

One of the truly fine shows of this 34th edition… the great George Benson, an absolutely incredible guitarist who has sold millions of albums. He was one of the first to sing his guitar notes as he played, is a great improviser and a true jazzman, but also a genuine hitmaker – especially with the Breezin’ album in 1976, which won him three Grammy Awards. And that’s what he’ll be playing for us here: his greatest hits. I think the entire Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier crowd will be singing and dancing all night!

Already recognized as a major guitarist ranked among the likes of Pat Metheny and John McLaughlin, Kurt Rosenwinkel has become the darling of jazz guitar. I recently saw him perform alongside Eric Clapton – a memorable show. Don’t miss it.

I am a big fan of Martha Wainwright, the Montreal singer-songwriter who is the youngest of the McGarrigle-Wainwright clan. She is immensely passionate, a complete artist with a throaty voice that will a find your heart where it lives. Seven years after she held Métropolis in her sway, I’m delighted that we’re bringing her to Théâtre Maisonneuve, a kind of confirmation of her artistic stature.

A great friend of this Festival, where he performed 14 times, Dave Brubeck passed away this past December. To pay tribute to this giant on the closing day of the event, we’ll present a concert starring the quartet led by his sons and featuring Montreal musical guests including Chet Doxas and Lorraine Desmarais. It’s certain to be a very touching moment, and certainly a concert I will not miss, given the friendship we shared for 40 years, ever since the very first time we invited him to play Montreal.
