FOR CANADAJOURNAL.COM: OSBY AND ZALDIBAR TRIO GET REAL JAZZ IMPROV GOING AT FIJM
2012
Michel Bonin (Vancouver)

ON OPENING CONCERT AT L`ASTRAL, I JUST HEARD TENOR SAX ALTO GREAT GREG OSBY WITH PIANIST RAFAEL ZALDIVAR AT MONTREAL JAZZ FEST IN BEST EVER INTERPRETATION OF STANDARD *ASK ME NOW* SINCE CHARLIE PARKER. As far as I am concerned, Osby may be the real 'all-star' pick for this 33rd edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Go listen and you will know what I mean! For those of Northeast Asian origin who may come to read this, Zaldivar is likely an unknown at least in China, South Korea and among the jazz savvy fans in Japan. He was also a stranger to me but not to the well-acquainted aficionados on the now rejuvenated jazz scene in Montreal. With places like 'Le Balmoral' and 'l'Astral', the 'quartier des spectacles' has turned the jazz scene into full year-round effervescence in this Quebec metropolis. This is the first of eight selections being published in Japanese, Chinese and Korean through CanadaJournal.com. FOR DISCUSSIONS, follow my tweets @pianoreflexions
