Alex Bellegarde

1974 -

Origin: Quebec, Canada

Main instrument: Bass/double bass/cello

Genre: Jazz

Born in Montreal, bassist and double bassist Alex Bellegarde started out playing with the Ensemble Davignon and the Massey Vanier Band, as well as dabbling in musical theatre. Influenced by late, lamented double bassist Skip Bey, he forged his reputation in Quebec as a member of the Vic Vogel Octet, playing at the OFF Festival de Jazz de Montréal and in clubs and festivals all over North America and Europe, along with leading a very popular weekly jam-session. His style: high-energy music with myriad influences, blending jazz, Latin and other multi-disciplinary music. He has performed in a number of multi-disciplinary projects including the Festival Voix d' Amériques, Exit sur Scène (poetry), Émergence Énergie (jazz, poetry, dance, live painting) and with the jazz é-tape project (music, theatre and tap). Winner of the Grand Jazz Award at the 26th Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, he’s released a number of albums, including Floating (2014), recorded with his trio.
