Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Al Stewart grew up in Southwest England. The arrival of Beatlemania inspired him to pick up an electric guitar and play with a few local rock outfits. Folk artists like Bob Dylan and Donovan also had a strong influence on the young singer-songwriter. His first album, Bedsitter Images, came out in 1967, followed by a string of critically acclaimed albums featuring a variety of different sounds and styles. International success finally arrived with the 1976 Alan Parsons-produced soft-rock album The Year of the Cat, tailor-made for FM radio. While the musician's later releases proved less popular, he never stopped recording and touring for his loyal fans.
