SFJAZZ Collective
Origin: United States
Genre: Jazz
The SFJAZZ Collective came together in 2004, under the initiative of SG Jazz, the organization behind the San Francisco Jazz Festival. The band's repertoire is an eclectic mix of original material and compositions from a jazz master. In its first year, the Collective explored the music of Ornette Coleman and played pieces by then-members Joshua Redman, Bobby Hutcherson and Renee Rosnes. The result can be heard on the 2005 SF Jazz Collective album. The experiment has been carried anew every year since, with the orchestra delving into the works of John Coltrane (2005), McCoy Tyner (2009), and Stevie Wonder (2011)-to name but a few- and showcasing the talents of such next-generation jazzmen as Miguel Zenon, Avishai Cohen and Matt Penman.
