Mexican Institute of Sound
Origin: Mexico
Genres: Electronica, Latin
DJ Camilo Lara has a collection of more than 45 000 discs and is a former president of EMI Mexico. He's also the brains behind Mexican Institute of Sound. An untrained musician, he began playing with samples and synthesizers, making annual Christmas mixes for his friends. He refers to these pastiches of electronica, dub, cumbia and forgotten aspects of Mexican culture as "inside jokes". He founded MIS officially in 2005, releasing a debut album, Méjico Máxico (2006), followed by Piñata (2007), with collaboration by members of the Tom Tom Club, Fantastic Plastic Machine and Babasónicos. In 2009 he put out Soy Sauce, and in 2011 was named International Young Music Entrepreneur by the British Council.
