Multi-disciplinary artist Irem Bekter was born in Istanbul and raised in England with her mother, painter Ayfer Gursoz. As a teenager, she studied dance at the Elmhurst Ballet School, and later on graduated from the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, in 1979, where she studied acting and directing. In 1984, she moved to Argentina, working with legendary singer Mercedes Sosa and immersing herself in the country's folkloric dances and music. A renowned artist and performer worldwide, Bekter settled in Montréal in 2006, where she now teaches Argentinean dances and is an active member of the province of Quebec's cultural landscape. Backed by the Diabluras, the group she formed in 2007, Bekter created the performance show Súpay, which will be presented at the Festival in 2010.
