Toronto-based and world renowned trombonist Darren Sigesmund first studied jazz performance at the University of Toronto, followed by trombone under the tutelage of various teachers, including Gord Sweeny of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. After a successful career as a chef, the trombonist formed an ensemble in 2003, featuring vocalist Eliana Cuevas and percussionist Daniel Stone, to support his Latin-infused Strands project. After more than 100 concerts around the world, Sigesmund released Strands in 2008 and its follow-up, Strands II, in 2009, with special guest Tim Ries of the Rolling Stones on tenor saxophone. The acclaimed album spawned a worldwide tour and various accolades, namely JUNO and National Jazz Awards nominations.
