An accomplished and world-renowned versatile drummer, Cindy Blackman was born in Ohio and raised in Connecticut by her mother, a classically trained musician. After a short academic period at Boston's Berklee College of Music studying under drum legends Alan Dawson and Lennie Nelson, she moved to NYC in the 1980s, starting out as a street performer and quickly working her way up to celebrity status as Lenny Kravitz's official drummer for 11 years. She has released her own successful drumming instructional videos, several solo albums and has backed some of jazz's finest musicians, including Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean and Cassandra Wilson. In 2010, Blackman released Another Lifetime, a tribute to seminal jazz fusion band The Tony Williams Lifetime.
