Origin: United States
At first listen, the nine-piece Hypnotic Brass Ensemble recalls the big band sound of New Orleans, but its musical roots lie in the group's native Chicago, stretching back to the progressive jazz scene of the 1960s and '70s. Not surprising, considering all eight brass players are the sons of esteemed jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran. After playing together as a youth ensemble during the 1980s, the outfit officially formed in 1999 and relocated to New York six years later. Crafting jazz savvy arrangements with a hip-hop sensibility, the versatile Ensemble has supported Mos Def and Blur, and recorded with Erykah Badu and Maxwell.
