Kaba Horo
Origin: Bulgaria / Quebec, Canada
Genre: World
Bulgarian Lubo Alexandrov learned to play his country's traditional folk music from his grandfather, himself a well known kaval player. After moving to Montreal to study jazz at Concordia University and to learn from masters of the fretless guitar and the oud, the guitarist and singer-songwriter formed his band, Kaba Horo, in 2003. Expanding on the rather niche market of Balkan gypsy village wedding music, the group incorporated funk, rock and roots on their rousing debut recording, which was released in 2006 and won the Juno for best world music album the next year. Their follow-up, Contrabanda, sent audiences right back out onto the dance floor in 2008.
