Origin: Quebec, Canada

Genres: Hip-hop, Jazz, R&B/Soul/Funk

Since 2003, Kalmunity features a multicultural, multidisciplinary group of musicians performing "live, organic improv" every Tuesday night at Sablo Kafé in Montreal's Little Italy. Led by founder and drummer Jahsun and MC vocalist Josephine Watson, the collective now includes over 60 musicians and celebrated its 6th anniversary in 2009. The popular weekly sessions have evolved to include showcase gigs at larger venues Sala Rossa and Kola Note. Regardless of location, the focus stays on the music; unlike a jam, Kalmunity's improv is as much about the audience's participation as the performers'. Kalmunity was named Best jazz and Spoken word act by Cult MTL (2015), Best local Jazz/Blues act by Le Camuz (2015), one of the top 10 cool things to do in Montreal by Local Montreal Tours (2015). In 2015, Kalmunity has released two "live in concert" EP's as well as an anthology of literature entitled The Talking Book.
