Singer Linda Viera Caballero, the god-daughter of Celia Cruz, was nicknamed La India for her long black hair. The Puerto Rican native was raised in the Bronx. After a stint on the catwalk, she lent her voice to producer (and, for a while, husband) Louie Vega. In 1992, she released La India Llego, with the help of pianist Eddie Palmieri. From then on, she enjoyed a very successful spell which saw her through the 1990s.
