The Orb
Origin: United Kingdom
It's hard to speak of ambient electronic (or chill-out) music without mentioning The Orb. This London-based group was assembled in 1988 by Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty (the future KLF). Strongly influenced by Brian Eno, Kraftwerk and dub, they soared to popular success with the 1991 hit Little Fluffy Clouds. With slow ambient rhythms and ethereal sonorities, The Orb gave ravers the perfect music to chill by after a night of dancing. The group is still going strong long after many of their contemporaries called it a career.
