Renowned for his elegant playing, rhythmic sensibility and talents as a composer and improviser, American trumpeter Ron Miles is considered among today’s most melodic players on his instrument by clarinetist Ben Goldberg. A Denver resident since the age of 11, Miles picked up the trumpet as a teenager and studied music at the University of Denver, then at the Manhattan School of Music. A former member of the Mercer Ellington Orchestra, he formed a friendship in the ’90s with guitarist Bill Frisell, who became one of his favourite collaborators. With a blend of influences from progressive jazz to gospel, he boasts an enviable discography of albums as a bandleader, along with many collaborations with players including Jason Moran, Matt Wilson, the Bad Plus, Ginger Baker, Madeleine Peyroux and Ben Goldberg. In 2012, he recorded Quiver with Bill Frisell and Brian Blade, following with Circuit Rider in 2014.
