Houston Person
1934 -
Origin: United States
Main instrument:
Saxophone
Genres: Jazz, Swing
South Carolina native Houston Person has recorded more than 75 albums during a career spanning 50 years. Yet the tenor sax player cum producer was long overshadowed by singer Etta James, whom he accompanied on stage and in studio for some 30 years. From 1963 to 1966, Person was a member of the combo fronted by organist Johnny Hammond. He has also a collaborated with Charles Brown, Bill Charlap, Lou Rawls and Horace Silver. Person has dabbled in hard bop and swing but is best known for his expressive, slightly brazen soul-jazz style.
