Origin: United States, Zimbabwe
This Zimbabwean woman was Radio France International's Discovery for 1998, the year she released her first album. Born in the United States to an artistic family, she returned to Zimbabwe in 1990 where she started her first rap group. After being forced into exile, Chiwoniso found shelter in London. She sings against violence and is a willful freedom of speech supporter. A strong individual and rebel soul, this mbira player (a thumb piano which in the past was played exclusively by men) adds current pop tones to her country's traditional sonic palette.
