Asa was born in Paris but grew up in Nigeria. At a young age, she was drawn to the music of soul singers like Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin. At 18, Asa learned to play the guitar, and in 2004 she met her musical partner Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo. With Asuquo at her side, the Nigerian singer penned lyrics in English and Yoruba and set them to pop and soul melodies. Since MTV named her ambassador of South Africa, Asa's popularity has soared. In 2007 she put out a self-titled debut album with Christophe Dupouy. The album went certified gold in France. Beautiful Imperfection came out in 2010.
