Rudresh Mahanthappa

1971 -

Origin: India / United States

Main instrument: Saxophone

Genre: Jazz

Rudresh Mahanthappa is a composer and saxophonist of Indian origin and former Berklee student. While studying in Boston, he met saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath, exploring a mutual interest in Carnatic music (a genre specific to the South of India). The two friends joined forces on the album Kinsmen in 2008, resulting in an appealing union of jazz and Indian culture, created with a fascinating blend of sounds. Based in New York, he is involved in seven projects, including the Mahanthappa Quartet with Vijay Iyer on piano. His work has received high praise from critics, particularly the album Codebook, released in 2006. For Apex (2010), Mahanthappa paired with fellow alto saxophonist Bunky Green. Samdhi followed in 2011.
