Courtney Pine

1964 -

Origin: United Kingdom

Main instrument: Saxophone

Genre: Jazz

A sharp-toothed young lion when he first played the Festival in 1988, Courtney Pine has become a standard-bearer on the British jazz scene, building an enviable reputation for his impeccable playing, his flair for musical innovation and his melodic and rhythmic beyond the boundaries and beaten track of jazz. His career boasts 25 years of touring and 17 albums: from his revelatory 1987 debut album, A Journey to the Urge Within to his latest, House of Legends, he has explored the contours of jazz while visiting hip-hop, ska, merengue and calypso, and proved himself a master of the saxophone and beyond, playing flute, clarinet and keyboards.
