In the 1970s, after earning his Master's from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, Poland, Jacek Kochan moved to Edmonton, where he studied percussion and vibraphone. Soon after, he left for New York, to study with Jaco Pastorius, Mike Clark and Robbie Gonzales. The mid-1980s found him in Montréal, composing for choirs and orchestra, and working with artists such as Michel Donato and Oliver Jones. In 1990, he moved again, this time to Toronto, and became involved in numerous recording projects. In 1995, he returned to Europe, where he is an active performer, recording artist and composer. Kocek has recorded numerous CDs both as leader and sideman. His latest release is Three Point Shot (2010), with saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi.
