Marisa dos Reis Nunes was born in Mozambique in 1973 and grew up in Lisbon, birthplace of Fado, the sound of her youth. Her first two albums, Fado em mi (2001) and Fado Curvo (2003) established her internationally as the ambassadress of the genre. Over the years, Mariza has performed in such notable venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Opera House in Sydney and the International House of Music in Moscow; her performances unveil an uncommon, daring, crossover Fado, marked by her wide-ranging influences. She has sung duets with Sting and shared the stage with Peter Gabriel, Youssou N’Dour and Angélique Kidjo. She has received an array of prizes including First Award for Most Outstanding Performance at the Festival d’été in Québec City in 2002 and Best European World Music Artist Award, presented by the BBC (2003 and 2005). The president of Portugal presented her with the International Award” for “making Portuguese music known worldwide”. Mariza’s discography includes albums Transparente (2005), Terra (2008), Fado Tradicional (2010) and most recently, Mundo (2015).
