Origin: Quebec, Canada
On a trip to Morocco and Senegal, Martin Bonin discovered percussion at the age of 18. He returned to West Africa several times and traveled to the Middle East, Central and South America, Cuba and Brazil to further expand his knowledge of indigenous instruments and rhythms. A self-taught musician, Bonin studied the djembe and congas before forming Zuruba in 1999. The 40 percussionist strong ensemble is styled after a Brazilian big band, but with the added oomph of an African rhythm section. It has participated in the Festival, the FrancoFolies and Just For Laughs, among others.
