Another graduate of the famous Berklee School of Music, pianist-composer-author Kenny Werner's first album came out in 1977. In 1981 he released Beyond the Forest of Mirkwood, an album featuring his own original compositions. He spent a good part of the 1980s playing with Archie Shepp, and over the years has worked with a huge range of artists, developing close ties with Toots Thielemans, Joe Lovano, and Joyce, from Brazil. Not only a pianist and composer, Kenny Werner is a published author and has written several books on his personal approach to music. In 2012, the artist released the live solo piano effort Me, Myself & I, recorded a year earlier at Upstairs during the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.
