Los Van Van
Origin: Cuba
Genres: Latin, Pop
One of the most influential Cuban bands of the 20th century, Los Van Van translates as "they go-go." The ensemble has done just that, with 2009 marking its 40th anniversary. Longevity isn't Los Van Van's only claim to fame: its key members, bassist Juan Formell, pianist César Fedroso and percussionist José Luis Changuito Quintana, were instrumental in developing "songo" music, which blends elements of son Cubano and rumba with funk and jazz. They were also the first Cuban band to use synthesizers and drum machines. In 1999, Los Van Van won a Grammy for its 15th album, Llegó Van Van.
