The Count Basie Orchestra
Origin: United States
One of the longest running big bands in history, Count Basie's Orchestra was founded by the legendary pianist in 1935. Now an American institution, the orchestra first gained recognition for showcasing some of the most talented singers and musicians of the 1930s and 1940s, including Billie Holiday and Lester Young. Count Basie, who championed the Kansas City Jazz style during his prolific career, led the ensemble until his death in 1984. The orchestra continues to thrive, however, touring and recording with 19 performers, 17 sidemen and one vocalist - several of whom were recruited by the Count himself.
