Montreal-born James Gelfand took his first classical piano lessons at age 4. During his teens, he discovered jazz as well as other music genres. A gifted pianist, he has competed in several jazz festivals throughout North America and Europe. Over the years, he has appeared on many recordings, whether as leader or collaborator. Since the mid-1990s, Gelfand has been mainly scoring music for film and television programs. A Festival regular, Gelfand also tinkles the ivories for the Petite école du jazz's young audiences.
