Named after his scruffy appearance, DJ Andy Carthy, a.k.a. Mr. Scruff, is a British pioneer of quirky turntablism. Born in Manchester in 1972, Carthy got his first taste of vintage soul sounds from his father's record collection, rich in authentic ska from the legendary Blue Beat label. By 1994, he had his first 12 inch released, Sea Mammal. In 1999, British label Ninja Tune signed him on and released Keep it Unreal, spawning the successful DJ night of the same name. His sets feature a loving and usually humorous mix of soul, Latin grooves, hip hop, ska, reggae, 1960s and 1970s pop, jazz and funk, creating a unique atmosphere still unparalleled by no other DJ. After selling half a million albums worldwide, he released the album Ninja Tune in 2008.
