Norwegian Tord Gustavsen began playing the piano at the age of 4. He later developed his compositional and improvisational skills before undertaking classical training. The musician opened his ears to jazz during his college years. After graduating, he took on freelance work, and quickly became a staple of the Norwegian jazz scene. In 1999, Gustavsen teamed up with songstress Siri Gjære to record his first album. Four years later, he signed to ECM with bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad. The trio released the albums Changing Places in 2003, The Ground in 2005 and Being There in 2007. Commissioned by the Vossajazz Festival, the pianist put together the Tord Gustavsen Ensemble in 2008. The album Restored, Returned came out two years later. The Well followed in early 2012.
