Starting out as a radio DJ in 1995 in Montréal University campus station CISM, DJ/producer Ghislain Poirier first got noticed with the release of his first album, Il n'y a pas de Sud, in 2001, releasing nearly one album or EP a year since, including Beats as Politics (2003) and the popular Sous le manguier (2006). In 2005, he started Montréal club night Bounce le gros, a success that took him around the world, including the Montreux Jazz Festival. Two years later, UK label Ninja Tune came knocking, starting with the release of No Ground Under (2007), featuring Montréal's Omnikrom, and three soca-influenced EPs, resulting in the album Rununing High in 2010, the first under his new, singular moniker, Poirier. Since 2009, Poirier has created a new club series, the dancehall Karnival nights.
